International Coeliac Day

International Coeliac Day

The 16th of May marks International Coeliac Day. Today, we join coeliac organisations worldwide in celebrating this important occasion.

The Importance of our Community

Earlier today, we took part in a children’s event, which is always something special. Children can enjoy themselves without any concerns about the food they will eat, while parents and guardians have the opportunity to share their stories, experiences and tips with one another.

Coeliac Association Malta, together with its members, will continue working to organise similar events in the future. These activities help create a sense of community and build relationships among people who share a common understanding of the daily challenges of coeliac disease.

Mental Health

Many of these challenges are social in nature and are often overlooked. They can lead to anxiety, feelings of being a burden on others, misunderstandings and much more. These struggles are not limited to patients alone, parents and guardians may experience similar difficulties as well.

Mental health is an important aspect that deserves greater attention for coeliac patients, not only in Malta but also at a European level. AOECS has been raising awareness on this subject through this year’s webinar series during May.

Empower the Patient

Many people hesitate to speak openly about these difficulties or express their frustrations on social media. While online platforms may generate reactions and support from others, they do not always lead to the meaningful change that is needed.

Relevant authorities should be informed, and this is where CAM can help. Services can only improve if CAM and the authorities are made aware of the problems people experience. Our online guide can help you to voice your concerns.

Every patient has the right to safe, high-quality treatment and support, both within healthcare settings and beyond.

Thank you for your trust

We would like to end our message by thanking the coeliac community for the trust you place in us. Every call, email, message and meeting is worthwhile because of the experiences, feedback and concerns you share with us. Together, we can continue improving the quality of life for coeliacs.
