Coeliac Disease in Education

Coeliac Disease in Education

As we approach a new scholastic year, we have prepared a simple guide to help schools support students who suffer from coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity.

The guide has been shared with the Ministry for Education, State School Colleges, Independent Schools and the Delegate for Catholic Education. It is intended to support not only primary and secondary schools, but also childcare centres.

Teachers and other education professionals are welcome to contact us to receive a copy of the guide.

We hope that the guide will help create more awareness and contribute to creating a more inclusive environment.

What does the guide include?

The guide highlights the importance of clear communication and practical steps to minimise the risk of cross-contamination, through four key principles:

  • Prevent cross-contamination
  • Plan food activities and outings in advance
  • Keep food and eating areas clean and separate
  • Keep families, students and all staff informed

The guide also covers practical, everyday situations, including:

  • Birthday treats and food activities
  • Cooking at school
  • Non-food items that may contain gluten
  • And more
