Holy Communion

Holy Communion

The Vatican requires that Communion hosts contain some level of wheat. However, low-gluten or gluten-free hosts are available and considered safe for individuals with coeliac disease.

Options for Receiving Communion

  • Low-Gluten or Gluten-Free Hosts: These are acceptable under Vatican guidelines
  • Receiving Wine: If you are concerned about gluten exposure, you may choose to receive only consecrated wine

Preventing Cross-Contamination

  • Hosts should be handled only by the communicant to avoid contact with gluten-containing hosts
  • If receiving wine, ensure a separate chalice is used and that no ordinary hosts are dipped into it
